The Buzz on “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” Vistamar’s Spring Musical! Lilah Schulte, March 5, 2024 The Spring Musical is coming up soon with four shows through March 21st – 23rd. The cast and crew are working hard to put the production together. As part of the cast, I have made many fun memories already. To get to know the cast more, I interviewed some of my castmates on their experience in rehearsals. If you want to join in on some of the fun, there will be volunteer opportunities to join the spellers onstage, so stay tuned for these opportunities! Maddie Evangelist (Speller, Marigold, Olive’s Mom): What has been your favorite part about rehearsals so far? Hanging out with the cast and getting to know everyone better, especially getting to know people that I don’t have classes with. And it is very rewarding to get a harmony or dance right. Theater is about being a team! What are you most looking forward to in the Spelling Bee production? I am looking forward to playing three different roles. I am a speller, so I get to be in fun songs like Pandemonium. I am also Marigold, so I get to do some audience stuff as well, and I get to play Olive’s mom! I am also looking forward to all the costumes! If you were in a real spelling bee, what would be your signature spelling technique? I would do something visual so I can see it before I spell it, maybe spell it out in the air or on my arm. Asha Fouse Lawrence (Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre): What has been your favorite part about rehearsals so far? My favorite part has been getting to know everyone and having fun practicing the scenes. What are you most looking forward to in the Spelling Bee production? One, I want to see what the promotions are going to look like. Two, seeing who is going to volunteer. I want to see the outcome once it all comes together! If you were in a real spelling bee, what would be your signature spelling technique? I would think about it for 25 seconds, and then I would be like, “This is how you spell the word!” It’s a pretty boring technique, but it would be a signature 25-second wait. Matt De Alba (Leaf Coneybear): What has been your favorite part about rehearsals so far? Getting to learn about music because I have never done a musical before. Working with Dr. Gamer and Rebecca has been great! And, seeing how everyone brings their characters to life and add their own uniqueness to them. What are you most looking forward to in the Spelling Bee production? I am looking forward to the audience volunteers and seeing who is brave enough to volunteer and to interact with them on stage. I am also looking forward to performing a solo for the first time ever! If you were in a real spelling bee, what would be your signature spelling technique? I would probably sing the alphabet in my head to make sure that I got the right letter. Photo Credit: Music Theatre International Arts & Culture School News
