What Teachers Did Before Vistamar Carol Romano, October 7, 2025 Ever wonder what your teachers were up to before their professional career at Vistamar? Wonder no more, because today teachers will answer the question of what their first job was. First, in the Humanities commons, we start with Ms.U. Ms. U: “At 16 years old I was a Kumon tutor. Although I was teaching mostly kindergarteners with ADHD, (I definitely shouldn’t have been tutoring math) but it was so fun.” I guess now we know the origin of Ms. U’s love for humanities, but not so much for math… Now over to the World Language commons Sr. Oliveros is going to share his first job: Sr. Oliveros: “I worked at the LA Zoo for a summer, but I got fired. Interviewer: “Oh no, How did this happen?” Sr. Oliveros: “I got fired because I was putting PETA pamphlets into the maps. I was a bilingual tour guide then my boss realized I was putting those pamphlets for the ethical treatment of animals. After this, they demoted me to cleaning the windows in the exhibits, but I was like ‘nah’ so I quit.” Seems like Sr. Oliveros has been dealing with animals his whole career… I’m talking to you AP Spanish 3. Next up over to the Math commons, the man who seems to have various lives, Mr. Miot: Mr. Miot: “I used to pick coconuts and fruit like that when I was a little kid, but during high school I worked part time as a landscaper, but my main job was summer camp.” Wow Mr. Miot really can do anything…except teach math. Finally Ms. Deutsch, we all wonder what she did before living in the 3D art room. Ms. Deutsch: “When I was 8, my neighbor would pay me $35 to swim around his pool and catch frogs.” So, next time you’re stressing about your own future career, just remember: our teachers started with Kumon worksheets, zoo pamphlets, coconut-picking, and frog-chasing. If they turned out fine (well… mostly), you’ll be just fine too. Features School News
